A Parking Lot Became a Data Center in a Matter of Months

Fujitsu needed to extend a 3.2 MW data center north of London, and the space available was a parking lot that had to be operational on a tight schedule.

Project Facts

  • Industry

    IT services and data centers

  • Location

    North of London, England

  • System

Track Busway, 250 amp, with integrated metering

  • Scale

    3.2 MW facility

The Facility

Fujitsu is among the largest information and communication technology providers in the world, employing over 9,000 people in the UK and Ireland and running several data centers there.

The Problem

Customer demand required an extension to a 3.2 MW data center, and the space available was a parking lot that had to become operational in months. The existing facility distributed power through traditional cabling under a raised floor. Fujitsu typically supplies two 32 amp feeds per cabinet, and when a customer needs something beyond that, the job means running cable between cabinets and PDUs.

The Busway System They Installed

Starline’s 250 amp Track Busway as the overhead distribution, with metering integrated into the tap-off units. Fujitsu specified the ability to use either wired or wireless meters.

The Result

Head of Data Centre Development Simon Levey described having tap-offs on site and being able to plug them in and have additional circuits running for customers within minutes. His advice to others specifying it: label carefully, get the bus bar orientation right, and know your tap box requirements as early as possible.
